The Greek Erectheum capitals took their form from variations
on the Ionic order, which featured four scrolls at each corner
of the top of the capital. The topmost face of the column was usually
a flat square surface called the abacus. In the Ionic order, two
of the scrolls (designed to resemble animal horns) were faced in
opposite directions along one side of the abacus. The other two
were in a mirrored position along the opposite side of the abacus’ square.
