Round Tapered Fluted

Fluted round tapered columns were created by the Greeks who used wooden tree trunks for columns. When Greek builders shaved the bark off the trunks to clean the wood, it left vertical gouges. As they continued to build and create columns from stone, the fluted columns remained as a design element making the columns appear both elegant and regal.

The two principal orders of fluted round tapered columns are the Doric and the Ionic. The Doric order usually has 20 flutes while the Ionic order has 24. The Doric order was not widely used in the US until after the Greek revival architecture was introduced at the beginning of the 19th century. Now buildings with fluted columns can be found across the US in historically preserved buildings.

Fluted round tapered columns are made from wood or fiberglass and may be used both indoors and out depending on the look and feel desired in the home. Available in stain and paint ready versions, fluted columns will add the look of elegance to any home.

The main distinction of the Doric order is that is stands alone with no base. The Ionic order originated in the mid-6th century BC in Ionia, the southwestern coastland and islands of Asia Minor settled by Ionian Greeks. Ionic order fluted columns, although similar to the Doric order; normally stand on a base which separates the shaft of the column from the platform. Ionic fluted columns are normally more slender than Doric fluted columns.
